This map illustration shows a 21st-century retreat of the Jakobshavn in west Greenland. From an 18th century perspective, the glacier is nearly stagnant; today it moves at a fast rate. This retreat is part of an over-wide retreat observed in many places throughout Greenland, where the ice sheet is thinning rapidly and becoming less grounded to rock and more floating on water.
